What does "Home Compostable" mean for dog poop bags?
A home compostable bag is made from corn starch-based materials that break down naturally in a home composting environment. Unlike industrial composting, which requires high heat and specialized facilities, home compostable bags can decompose effectively in a well-managed backyard compost bin under regular conditions. With proper care—such as maintaining the right balance of greens and browns, aeration, and moisture—these bags will break down as expected into nutrient-rich compost, leaving no harmful residues. However, due to harmful bacteria in dog waste, we recommend using the compost only for non-edible gardening purposes.
What does "Biodegradable" mean, and how is it different from "Home Compostable"?
- Biodegradable: This refers to materials that can break down naturally into smaller, non-toxic components (like water, carbon dioxide, and biomass) with the help of microorganisms, over time. However, "biodegradable" doesn’t guarantee the timeframe or conditions for this process, and some items may leave behind residues or take years to degrade.
- Compostable: Compostable materials break down under specific composting conditions, leaving no harmful residues. They must decompose fully into nutrient-rich compost that supports plant growth, typically requiring the high heat and controlled conditions of industrial composting facilities.
- Home Compostable: These materials are a subset of compostable items designed to break down in a standard backyard composting environment, without the need for industrial facilities. Home composting usually involves lower temperatures and less controlled conditions, so the product must decompose effectively under these settings.
Key Difference: While all compostable items are biodegradable, not all biodegradable items are compostable. Home Compostable products must meet stricter criteria and leave no harmful residues, with home compostable items being specially designed for backyard composting. Biodegradable products, on the other hand, might break down partially, slowly, or leave traces behind, depending on the material and environment.
What certifications do your home compostable bags have?
Our home compostable bags are certified to meet rigorous global standards for compostability and sustainability:
- OK Compost Home (TÜV Austria): This certification ensures that our bags decompose effectively in a home composting environment, breaking down under regular backyard composting conditions without leaving harmful residues.
- Seedling Certification (DIN CERTCO): This certification verifies compliance with European standard EN 13432, ensuring our bags fully break down in industrial composting facilities under controlled conditions.
- BPI Certification (Canada Only): Certified by the Biodegradable Products Institute, this certification confirms that our bags meet North American standards for industrial compostability. However, this certification applies only in Canada due to the availability of commercial composting facilities there that accept pet waste bags. In many areas of the United States, facilities do not accept pet waste bags for composting, which limits the scope of BPI certification outside Canada.
Therefore, it is important to check locally for best composting practices and common guidelines. Contacting your local waste management or composting facility is always a great place to start to ensure proper disposal.
Are the bags strong and leak-proof & odor-proof?
Yes, our compostable dog poop bags are durable and designed to be leak-proof & odor-proof with a thickness of 0.67 mil. They’ve been tested to ensure they can handle the job while keeping your hands protected.
Can these bags be composted anywhere?
Our bags are certified for home composting and can be composted in your backyard for non-edible gardening. However, not all commercial composting facilities accept them, so it's important to check with your local facility. In Canada, they are certified for use in commercial composting. Please check locally.
Can these bags be composted in the USA?
Our bags are certified for home composting and can be composted in your backyard for non-edible gardening. However, in the USA, there are currently no or very limited commercial composting facilities that accept pet waste bags, so it's important to check with your local facility. In Canada, they are certified for use in commercial composting. Please check locally.
